Internet Porn and Japan

So I was looking for an internet cafe in Sano where I was staying and as far as I could tell there weren't any. The public library still doesn't have internet. Random towns in Ecuador had much better internet access than this.

But I was really desperate since I wasn't sure when my flight was leaving so I asked everyone and I finally found one:

I don't think these photos even begin to capture how seedy the place was. The woman at the door offered me deals like a discount card where for a month you can get unlimited usage between 11PM and 8AM. Also there was a wall of porn comics for sale. I was there around 10 am and I'm pretty sure I could hear someone masturbating near my cube.

One interesting thing I've learned at Yahoo is that Japanese porn search rates are lower than US, but around half of cell phone searches are for porn (Japanese have way more cell phone internet coverage than us and they do a lot of searching). I guess market research showed that it's because most Japanese people don't like to look at porn while at work or at home. So I guess that's what the internet cafes are for. And maybe that stigma is why they're harder to find than in most countries.

On a related topic, I took this photo while biking home from the internet cafe:

Looking at the photo now (I took while I was biking by since there were a lot of people around and since I am a foreigner everyone watches what I do so I felt embarrased to be photographing it) I see some other stuff that looks like they could be jokes. But mostly this store is selling grave stones. You can't see them since there off to the right of the photo. I really wish I had taken this from another angle, but take my word for it that most of what this store sells is traditional looking head stones. So I'm still wondering, is it a joke? Or are they blind?

Japanese host family

I was pretty nervous about visiting my host family in Japan. It's been 8 years since I moved there, and 6 years since I last saw them. Also, my host brother Hiroshi crashed his motorcycle and was in a coma for almost a year and is severely brain damaged. From the letters and phone calls I really didn't know what to expect. It turns out Hiroshi can't walk or talk, but he's pretty mobile on his wheelchair. He seems kind of like a five year old kid. He always wants to kiss your hand and if you don't let him he goes nuts and yells and turns the lights on and off. It seems like an easy thing to read into him but I'm sure that I could sense his old personality even though he can't communicate at all.

It's interesting the different ways his injury affects their lives. The kotatsu was replaced with a western style table so that he could wheel around it and the living room is now filled with things like his toilet and hadicap ramp. Also they can't keep any food in the refrigerator because he is constantly looking in the fridge and got fat and they had to put him on a diet. So now all the food that they buy they have to cook right away or hide upstairs.

For some reason I felt the saddest when I saw his old room which was completely unchanged in seven years and a funny sign on his door that says "if someone is in here it is extremely important to knock (three times is best)" which he tacked up after his parents walked in on him smoking. Since he can't walk and his room is on the second floor, I'm sure he hasn't been in it since the accident. I wonder why they haven't cleaned out his room or at least taken that sign off his door. I think I would have done that.

I didn't expect how intense it would be to go back in to a life that I had mostly forgotten. Even with Hiroshi affecting their lives a lot, it felt like hardly anything had changed. My host mother did my laundry and cooked three delicious meals every day. My room was exactly the same as when I left. Some books I had left on a shelf hadn't moved at all. The daily routine was still basically the same, with the host dad leaving early and coming home late and the mom working around the house all day. Even Taishi was still living in the same room, although he's been working as a mechanic at a Toyota dealership for the last four years. One night he brought a girl over and it was just like old times when he used to jam the thin sliding door shut and crank up the Titanic theme song on repeat so people wouldn't hear him getting it on.

My room:

Taishi's room (with less beer cans and cigarette butts on the floor than usual):

Sometimes I wish I could relive parts of my life, and this might be the closest I will ever come to that. I biked the same 10 mile route to school that I biked six days a week for a year, and I was surprised how easily I remembered all the turns, since it was long and windy and I could never tell you which way to go at any turn without actually being there. I biked to the park where I used to go make out with an old girlfriend and on the way there smelled the same unique mix of the rice fields and the auto crushing plant which physically caused some kind of pavlovian rush of the exact same adrenaline I used to feel as a teenage boy knowing I was about to get some.

I didn't really think to take many pictures of my day to day life in Japan, and there's not much that reminds me of it so it's the part of my life that I remember and think about the least, even though it was a really important time for me. And so every place I went while I was there brought back some memory that I hadn't thought of in years. This time I took a few pictures, although I don't know if they will be interesting to anyone except me.

I hope this post isn't getting too long, but it's better than those endless travel emails you get from people, and I won't put weird details at the end to see who kept reading the whole thing.

More Japan

I love Japanese baths. The hotel I'm staying at has the best one I've seen. The bath is in the shower with a drain on the floor so you can fill up the bathtub to be top, jump in and splash tons of water over the edge. Every night I've done this. I don't know why it's so satisfying. Also you can watch TV from your bath Scarface style. When I grow up I want to have a bath like this.

Saturday night I'm going to try to stay at one of those capsule hotels.

Tokyo

You guys might think you're having fun but look at all the awesome times I'm having:

And I don't want to brag or nothing but my hotel room has two TVs and two beds. I might say something rude by the grandparents are now reading this block.

By the way Mike, putting in the blue crash screen as a slide in the power point presentation went over really well. I took out the the zooming hello kitty though.

her life is about to change radically

after being discovered online:

German schoolgirl Annika Irmler has licked her way into the Guinness Book of Records with her whopping seven centimetre tongue.

"My friends always said I had an incredibly long tongue - I could make lots of money with it one day," said Annika.

The twelve-year-old from Tangstedt, near Hamburg, can lick the ice cream from the bottom of a cornet - while her friends have to use their fingers.

"I'm just proud that now people everywhere can read about me and my tongue," she said.

"On my first day at school I had to stick my tongue out for everyone."

Ricky Manning punches nerd

ok in other news...

According to a report in the Chicago Sun-Times, Los Angeles Police Department detective Robert Lewis said a group of people -- including Manning -- attacked a man in a Denny's after teasing him for working on a laptop computer.

"The group began by making comments that the victim looked like a geek or a nerd," Lewis said, according to the Sun-Times.

The newspaper quoted Lewis saying the victim complained to a Denny's manager. He was then punched in the face, then punched and kicked by multiple attackers until losing consciousness.
...
Manning was released after posting $30,000 bail.

"I was pretty down this morning because of the situation," Manning said."But when I found out I was a Chicago Bear, it kind of brought a little light to the day. ... I can't let something like this let me have a bad start to my football career in Chicago."

strippers

in the Chronicle op-eds, there is a guy writing about the Duke rape case. columnists are less quick to condemn the players for rape now, so this guy goes after the culture of drinking and strippers. he asks why it's considered normal for athletes to hire strippers for a party, and why the girl thought it was acceptable to be a stripper to support herself, knowing she was putting herself in an unsafe situation. he also is upset that the Duke players hired black strippers, when there was only one black player on the team.

world cup is a ho

wtf?? only in a city where public drinking is encouraged.
from the Exberliner:

Bordellos in a box
For fans looking to celebrate victory or forget failure, a post-game quickie at this year's championships will be cheaper and easier to come by than a seat at the matches themselves.
In Dortmund and Cologne , mobile 'performance boxes' are being installed, replete with snacks and condom vending machines, toilets, alarms and emergency exits.
Similar small-scale, wooden brothels will be built along the Heerstrasse in Berlin , a mere stumble from the Olympic Stadium.

And if sex in a box doesn't meet your expectations, a new 'super brothel' boasting 70 rooms for 600 daily customers serves up a full range of carnal delights within walking distance of the stadium. Opened last September with the World Cup in mind, "Artemis" is the self-proclaimed McDonald's of sex.

Video remix?

The guys at Yahoo Labs came up with this video remixing program for the San Francisco film festival: http://fest06.sffs.org/remix/. You can take clips from all the movies at the festival and splice them together and they will show the best montage. It seems like a cool idea. I wonder if people will do any interesting stuff. Anyone want to go check it out Monday night?

Crime wave

A guy got stabbed for his laptop in the cafe I always work in on the day I usually work there: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2006/04/08/MNGE9I686K1.DTL

Good thing I had a conference call and stayed home last Thursday. I wonder why they didn't go to that communist coffee shop. I bet you could haul off some much fancier laptops there and you probably wouldn't have to stab those hippies to take their shit. It's funny, I always left my laptop sitting out when I went to the bathroom on the theory that someone could just as easily grab it off the table whether I was sitting there or not.

Also I heard a semi-automatic going off again over on 25th and Mission Saturday night. I think I might stay away from the Phone Booth until this dies down.

I talked to some cops the other day and they said they would be patroling our neighborhood more. They did show up minutes after the shooting. I wonder what set all this off.
